Hi Exgande, I’m not sure if this will help with your issue, as your post isn’t very clear to me, but it sounds like your confusing the use and purpose of the VB extensions (aka Guest Additions). The extensions package is meant to be installed in a system that is running within the Virtual Box (aka GUEST sysem), and provides better graphics and mouse support for the system running within the Virtual Box. It is not meant to be installed on the host system (if this is what you are trying to do. To run down a few scenarios: #1 - BSD HOST system with Linux/MS/apple Virtual Box system: From your TrueOS or PCBSD HOST system (ie, the system your computer boots up into), you would install Virtual Box from the AppCafe, and you might then install some other OS into Virtual Box, upon running the Virtual OS in VB, you can go to the “devices” menu, and mount the “Guest Additions CD”, which will provide the “extensions” to be installed in MS/Apple/Linux GUEST systems. #2 - Any HOST OS system with a BSD (TrueOS or PCBSD) Virtual Box GUEST system: The “Guest Additoins” provided with Virtual Box does not support BSD systems, So, if you are installing a BSD GUEST system into a VB, you need to use the “VB extensions” package found in the AppCafe in the GUEST OS (such as TrueOS or PCBSD).
Hope that makes sense to you, and helps. #3 - BSD Host system with a BSD GUEST system also: In this scenario, you would install Virtual Box into your HOST system, and upon installing and running a Virtual install of a BSD system, you would use the AppCafe in the GUEST system to install the VB extensions. You DON’T ever want to install the VB extensions/Guest Additions into your HOST system, as this will confuse your system, as it is not running in a Virtual Box. I’m not sure if this is your issue, but I hope it helps, it can get confusing when talking about HOST vs GUEST systems in virtual box, especially if you are running the same OS with both.
There seems to be some confusion here. First I’ll try to clarify some VirtualBox terms for the previous commenters.
Extensions and Guest Additions are not the same thing. VirtualBox releases an Extension Pack in binary form, of proprietary enhancements for the otherwise FOSS VirtualBox base install. The pack is listed as compatible with ‘all supported platforms’.
Since FreeBSD is not an officially supported VirtualBox platform to my knowledge, it’s possible that is why the extension pack will not install. The extension pack it looks like was attempted to be installed is mentioned in the documentation here: Now, to the original poster. I am not sure there is any reason to expect the extension pack to fix the issue you ran into with the machines not having any visible output in their window. The features it enables are very specific, as outlined in the link above. This is probably just one of the bugs in the VirtualBox 5.1 series that has not been fixed yet.
Overall 5.1 seems to be introducing a lot of regressions, even this late into its point releases (5.1.22 and core functionality is still being broken every other release). I have no suggestions for a fix but maybe the devs will with an understanding that the Guest Additions haven’t been installed on the TrueOS host machine, just a failed Extension Pack install. Guys thank you very much for your answers, I understand how the utilities of “Extension packs and the Guest Additions” I have used with linux and windows, it seems that I can not use the virtualbox extensions in trueOS / Freebsd as you have explained to me. I wanted to install the “extensions pack” because I thought it would fix the problem of not being able to view the virtual machines when they are running.
