Parallel desktop 8 keygen. Click to expand.I bought my Bottlehead Crack with Speedball pre-assembled off of ebay. So I am going from things that I have read.
I have no experience building/working on one. One of those things I have read about often is that the stock pot often does not track well at the lower settings of the volume control. I don't think the Speedball will help with this.
Mine came with a TKD pot which tracks perfectly but costs $99. I think that I would go with Alps RK27 suggestion. I googled those and see that they are much more reasonably priced. The only other thing that comes to mind, is if you have a way to turn down the volume going into your Crack. If you do that you could get your volume control to a higher level for the same volume level where it should be more linear in it's tracking.
(RK27 = Blue Velvet, RK40 - Black Beauty) I'm not sure what the best resistance is. I think 10K through 100K will work, with 50K and 100K being the most common I've seen. If not Alps, look for stereo (aka dual gang), audio or log taper. Some pots have pins that are usually meant for PCBs, but that doesn't mean you can't solder them up point-to-point still. Just follow the same guide you did for the Crack.
Find the pinout diagram for the RK27. Input to input, output to output, ground to ground, etc, making sure the same input channel is matched up with the same output channel. I don't think the TKD would necessarily be the best sound match for the Crack, but I could be wrong. Tocos Cosmos are good but might not necessarily be a lot better matched. Nicktoons games nickelodeon. Alps is usually a safe bet. Stepped attenuators, I like my Goldpoint in the Crack, and you can find some cheap Chinese ones on eBay, some aren't a series design either necessarily (less components in signal path). Lots of options!
You wouldn't be the first to swap the pot due to channel balance. A better pot will likely improve the sound too, or at least change it similar to tube rolling. Leave volume at max on computer and stick with ASIO or similar if you want to not have the Windows sampler in the way of things. Great job with your build. I agree with the others that upgrading the pot is a nice move.
You can also solve the channel imbalance issue by padding the stock pot with resistors as laid out in the Crack FAQ (No.3), which will help put your moderate listening volume in a more open and more reliable portion of the pot. Actually you might want to consider doing this anyway, even if you do upgrade the pot. It just allows you more room to set an accurate volume and significantly decreases the chances of you or a friend/visitor accidentally blowing their head off. The Speedball increases the gain a little bit too. As Hands says, lots of the Alps don't have solder-lugs with holes, so you can just wrap the ends of the wires around the pins and crimp them tightly to get a nice positive connection first before soldering.
